PRESS RELEASES

Local is paramount in planning

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) must allow councils to set local standards, says SEEC. For example, on locations for development and the balance between economic, environmental and social needs.

SEEC has submitted a response to Government consultation on the NPPF. Members have welcomed proposals to reduce bureaucracy and devolve power. However members also believe the NPPF needs to be clearer in setting out that it is in line with the principles of localism.

Local authorities recognise that economic growth is important but councils must be able to take account of local circumstances and have the powers to balance the economy with environmental and social needs.

SEEC has also argued for a clear transition period to the new system, allowing councils time to review local plans or put new ones in place. Read SEEC's full response to NPPF here.
