Levelling up to take pressure off overheating South East

Agenda for levelling up the main focus of the PM’s Conservative Party Conference speech.

South East Councils is pleased to hear the Prime Minister state that levelling up should take the pressure off the South East.

In his closing speech at the Conservative Party Conference, Boris Johnson noted it was not just about a gap between London and the South East and the rest of the country, but geographical inequalities across all areas.

Levelling up, he argued, will take the ‘pressure off parts of the overheating South East’ whilst also offering hope to those ‘left behind’ areas. For those across the South East, he no doubt hoped his words would provide reassurance that the levelling up agenda will not be at their expense.

As councils across the South East await more details on how the levelling up agenda will be delivered, many in local government will be hoping that local leaders will be empowered to act with greater powers and the ability to raise revenue.
